Olympic Games of Tokyo, 1964

XVIII (18th) OLYMPIAD
TOKYO, JAPAN | October 10th - 24th, 1964

Between October 10 - 24, 5140 athletes from 93 countries became guests of the land of the rising sun. Japan, for its part was eager to prove, as the first Asian host, that it was far removed from the atrocities of the Second World War. The organizers chose a potent symbol to prove their turnaround. Yoshinori Sakai, born on the day an atomic bomb was unleashed on Hiroshima, was chosen as the final runner to carry the Olympic flame into the arena. Thanks to "Mondovision" the Tokyo Games were seen by 600 million television viewers. An American satellite gave 23 European countries the opportunity to follow the events. Judo and volleyball made their debuts.
