Stamps from the Republic Congo “Independence”of 1960, overprint “11 juillet” and “l’Etat du Katanga”, no’s 40-49.
The Republic of the Congo (Leopoldville) issued these stamps on 30th June 1960 to commemorate the passing of that county’s status from a Belgian Congo to that of an independent state. The stamps were overprinted for the Katanga Postal Administration; the overprint changes the legend of the stamps to read “Independence de L’etat du Katanga, 11 Juillet 1960”. This changing of the legend had a two-fold ourpose. The first was to show that Katanga was the country of origin and the second was to mark 11 July 1960, the date of the Katanga Declaration of Independence.
