Brief History
On 9 August 1960, Albert Kalonji (b. 1919) proclaimed the region of South Kasaï as the Etat Autonome du Sud Kasaï and styled himself as the Chef Suprême du Peuple Muluba et Protecteur Incontesté des Tribus Associées à son sort (Supreme Chief of the Muluba People and Protector of the Associated Tribes). On 30 March 1961, the Great Council of the Chiefs awarded him the title of Mulopwe (King or Emperor). The autonomous state was abolished in 1962.

Postage Stamps of South Kasai:
The Autonomous State of South Kasai was a reasonably prolific postage stamp issuing entity despite its brief existence. Most of its releases consisted of overprints to various Belgian Congo colonial era issues (no’s 1-19). A series of overprints were applied to the fourth purpose-printed South Kasai issue, and although it is believed that these were not officially endorsed they are listed here along with known varieties. Postal used covers bearing South Kasai stamps are extremely scarce.
